Headache
For
two years, I suffered from tension headaches. Over this time they
increased in both frequency and intensity until the winter of 1998-1999,
I had headaches almost daily. Instead of noticing when I had a headache,
I noticed when they stopped. I tried everything: chiropractors,
massage, allergy testing, and almost every drug available. The drain
on my life was enormous: I was spending a fortune on drugs, doctors,
and missed work. And after working as many hours as I could in a
week, I had no energy left over for the rest of my life. It seemed
all I did was take pills and sleep. After my physical and MRI showed
nothing, my family doctor said, "Let me know if you figure out what's
going on." This was the lowest point--to learn that my doctor was
out of options. I went home with prescription drugs that provided
partial relief from the headaches, but hardly gave me a normal life.
One made me hyper and jumpy--I could only take it in the morning.
The other put me to sleep almost immediately. It was certainly better
than living with the pain, but I wanted a better solution.
I
joined the National Headache Foundation and learned about biofeedback
therapy. I asked my doctor about it, and he referred me to Joe Thomas.
I got some results after the first session. The headaches didn't stop
completely, but by applying the breathing techniques he taught me,
I was able to lessen the severity of the headache. Soon, I could stop
a headache at its onset. After a month of treatment, my headaches
were almost gone. I learned methods of relaxing my neck and shoulders.
People at work noticed how much happier and relaxed I was. I began
to learn how mental and emotional stress affected me physically. Now
I practice regular relaxation exercises to keep the tension from building
up. My appetite has increased. My energy level is way up. I am more
productive work, and I have energy left over for exercise, family
and my favorite activities. Joe Thomas gave me the tools to get my
life back. I recommend biofeedback to anyone who's suffering from
chronic pain.
